The Memory Catcher
TEAM: Elias Pfuner, Minh-Huy Dang, Toby Whelan
ROLE: Ideation, prototyping, storyboarding, documentation (filming, process photography)
DURATION: 2 weeks
Sound plays a crucial role in the memory making process. Many associates we create, and memories we subconsciously trigger are through our auditory sense. Dexai utilizes this auditory power to capture memories. Carefully selected sounds are collected from our environment and translated into physical memory strands that can be played and edited.
Room for Pause:
We are inundated with images as a form of memory capture and a recording of our lives. This documentation has become an often thoughtless act, and truly meaningful moments become lost in the shuffle of its instantaneous nature. The once reflective and process-oriented method of creating memories has been diluted, and reduced to a tap of a screen.
How might we bring back meaning to memory-making through the auditory sense?
We brainstormed elements that facilitate meaningful constellations of memory recording:
How might a memory recording scenario look?
She walks down the snowy path, her feet crunching softly in the snow. The forest around is silent, haunting. She is is ushered forward, drawn through the trees.
The newly fallen snow underfoot catches her attention, and she is acutely aware of the beautiful silence around her, punctuated by her footsteps.
Back at home, she takes her memory from the forest and stitches it onto a memory from a strand made from years past.
Taking out her Sound Catcher, she captures the sound of snow falling on the trail near by.
She feeds in her memory strand to the reader and listens to her complication of memories, reminiscing.
